SADAS takes part in Picariello Lectures during the Master’s Degree in Data Science at University of Naples – Department of Physics “Ettore Pancini”.

It will be a great opportunity to show the result of an important research about the implementation of an SQL-compliant data warehouse system based on trasposed files and its potential application on management of huge amount of data.

The Picariello lectures were established to keep alive the memory of Prof. Antonio Picariello who has been among the main supporters of the data science initiative at UNINA – University of Naples. The lectures cover all aspects of data science: from methodological innovation to applications and are jointly organised by the Department of Physics “Ettore Pancini” and by the DIETI – Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies – under the coordination of Prof. Flora Amato and Giuseppe Longo.

This Lecture will cover aspects which were at the center of Antonio’s research and professional interests and will be delivered by Eng. Luca de Rosa, Technical Manager at SADAS, a company which has collaborated with Prof. Antonio Picariello for many years.

The presentation is open to all those who feeds interest in the field of data science.

Sadas Engine, an innovative DBMS for the DATA WAREHOUSE, great performance in the VLDB environment.

Speaker: Eng. Luca de Rosa, Technical Manager – SADAS

Introduction: Flora Amanto and Roberta Siciliano

Abstract

Historically the main commercial data warehouse systems available today are based on record-oriented relational technology optimized for OLTP applications. Several authors have shown that substantial improvements in query performance for OLAP applications can be achieved by systems based on transposed files (column-oriented) technology, since the dominant queries require grouping and aggregation on a few columns of large amounts of data. This new assumption underlying data warehouse systems means that several aspects of data management and query processing need to be reconsidered. We present Sadas Engine the results of an industrial research project aimed at implementing an SQL-compliant prototype data warehouse system based on transposed files. Sadas Engine is the result of an industrial research project SADAS which began in March 2003 and has been sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) to support the cooperation of universities and industries in prototyping innovative systems. Prof. Antonio Albano (University of Pisa) was the scientific director of the project.

Short Bio

Luca de Rosa is the technical manager of Sadas srl, and personally leads the research group involved in the development of the “Sadas Engine” DBMS. He has more than 30 years of experience on databases specialized for the data warehouse, and in particular in the area of columnar approach. Luca de Rosa was involved in research activities with the “Second University of Naples” in the field of parallel computing and in particular on “On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) parallel” for Data Warehouse, distributed on Symmetric Multi Processor (SMP) clusters.
